Late posting of plein air image
2:25pm - Sep 14, 2009

Ok, it is a little late and I have no excuses other than my internet is playing up and causing so many issues.
We cannot seem to locate the problems, and take advantage of the connection when we have it, so please
allow for this if I seem a little lacking in the posts department.

Having said all that, this little study had eluded me last year as I was going away to Africa for a field trip at a time when the corn was
being cut, so I missed the corn rolls. I saw these in Lympne on the 13/8/09 and just had to paint them, hope you like the image.
Check out the Plein air and Marine galleries, as new images have just been added.
Best wishes Paul

En plein air or bust!!
3:09pm - Sep 9, 2009

En plein air or bust that is what I say. I love nothing more than going out in my new( secondhand) camper and painting something from a fresh perspective. I have had little time in the past, at least that is what I have often stated to all. Hey what rubbish, make time instead of a feeble excuse, and that is what I have been doing, getting out there and taking Catherine or Barnaby ( my son), willing or not, and getting into the act of painting out and about.

So watch out for more posts and exploits of the plein air kind.

By the way this scene was painted late one evening quite near to my studio. It is the view point at Farthing Corner in Kent, looking towards Sussex. I was chasing the sun down until I lost all my light. It was very recently, just having acquired my new secondhand camper, and Barnaby had na

New award
6:39pm - Sep 2, 2009

I exhibited 4 paintings at the recent Marwell International Wildlife Art Exhibition, and one of my paintings called 'Breaking Cover' was awarded 2nd place in the Best Non-British Wildlife category. It was a nice award to receive especially as it is sponsored by the zoo itself, and one I am happy to add to my Cv and efforts as an artist.

Other than that I do not have too much to report other than my recent En plein air painting adventures. I will add those posts in the next few days I hope, so pop back and take a look at what I am doing outside.

Latest Painting
7:14pm - Aug 24, 2009
This is my latest image, literally hot off the easel. It depicts a Sumartran Tigress lauching a suprise attack, an 'Ambush'.
The model for this painting is part of the WHF collection in Kent.
The painting has just been framed and will go on display with three other originals for the first time this coming Thursday at the Marwell International Art Society Show at the Marwell Zoo Park in Hampshire. Full details of this event can be found on my 2009 events page.

I do hope that you like the new painting, I really enjoyed creating it.
Best wishes Paul.

Latest new images from the easel
1:33pm - Jul 28, 2009

This is one of my latest images along with the one below. Both paintings have just been displayed for the first time at the CLA game fair last weekend.
The first image is called 'Unwanted Attention' and features three Teal, a happy pair going about their own business, whilst a third is showing rather too much attention,
and certainly unwanted interest. The painting measures 20" x 30"  and is oil on canvas.
It is for sale at £ 3,200.

The painting below is of  a single Teal study for the one above, it helped me decide tonal values and colour for the larger painting. it is also oil on canvas measuring
9" x 12" and is priced at £ 495.00

Both paintings are displayed within my galleries on the main website.
Best wishes as always Paul.

I'm Back!!
4:44pm - Jul 4, 2009

I am back as you can see. I have uploaded the new website to the internet. Now it looks quite a lot like the old site, but has been altered and fully updated.
It also contains current information and will be monitored and updated regularly.

You will notice that I have included the last few blog posts that were previously listed. This is just to continue some sort of thread. This new posting
marks the start of the new blog, so pop back regularly and see what I am up to. Subcscribe to the RSS feed as it will let you know when I post
something new.

Now this is important, the new web pages are not all in place, and some links are not yet in place. I am working in between my painting schedule to complete
the site as fast as I can. So again, pop back and see it develop. You will notice that the step by step guides are not available at this time on the blog.
I will be putting them within the website itself, and I hope to add a new members area where they can be easily accessed and enjoyed. This will also have
print offers and advance notices, so will be worth joining the membership.

Watch out also for the two new websites of my very talented wife Catherine and our new photographic joint venture at Living World Photography.
These new sites are being planned as I am typing this post and will be created in the next couple of months, so I hope you 'll watch out for them.

Lastly for the moment, my email contact is now paul@paulapps.com  By all means email thoughts and comments about my work and the website. I am
always interested to hear from you.

Best wishes for now, Paul.

P.S. Yes that's me in a WWII warbird, a Harvard Texan based at Rochester Airport. What a fantastic 50th birthday gift from my wife and family last year.
I left most of my stomach somewhere over the Thames estuary when I did the loop the loop and full barrel roll. Hey, what's more I flew it for a while as well!!
 Something I will always treasure.

Last Blog on the old site, see you all on the new website very soon!
3:20pm - Jul 4, 2009

Hi everyone, for those who regularly pop into my blog to see what I am doing then this post has important information for you.

As of the 20th of June my website will be offline for re-hosting and updating. The work needs to be carried out so that I can continue to provide the service and information to my clients and collectors alike, as well as to all who follow my career.

This will also affect my emails, so if you wish to contact me, email ASAP or telephone your enquiry.

For those thinking of lessons with me the books are filling up, so if you wish to come to me for lessons then I would advise that you do not delay as it will be on a first come, first served basis.

My telephone number is 01303 265126.

I promise that everything will be up and running in the shortest time possible, so if you have subscribed to the RSS feed system you may well have to re subscribe on the new version of www.paulapps.com

So please everyone be patient and keep checking my URL www.paulapps.com

Additionally, over the next month or so there will also be two new websites being launched

They are www.catherineapps.com. Yes, Catherine has finally been pushed into the 21st century. She will be hosting her own website very soon with all her wonderful images and information about her and her work. It will be well worth a visit, so watch out for that.

The second one will be www.living world photography.com (no gaps of course.).Catherine and I have long been collecting reference photographs for our paintings, and even if we have to say so ourselves we have got quite good at it. So we wanted to generate a new website that will showcase some of our images to the world, images from our travels in search of the next painting. This site will show the best of our photographs and we will be selling prints from it. We hope in the future to develop an image library that can be used for secondary licensing purposes.

Now this site might take a little longer to develop, but again be patient, I hope that when it is launched later on it will be worth the wait.

Best wishes for now Paul

DSWF - Wildlife Artist of the Year 2009
3:17pm - Jul 4, 2009

Well, the preview night finally arrived and Catherine, my daughter Sam and I attended the Mall galleries last Monday evening. The DSWF Wildlife Artist of the Year competition had reached its climax and the winners were revealed. Sadly I was not one of the three, but for the previous two years I have been a shortlisted finalist, so I cannot complain.

It was a well attended evening, on a very hot night in London. It was a wonderful event with amusing speeches from David Gower and Michael Parkinson and so much great art on hand to see, not least the retrospective paintings by David Shepherd himself. It was a pleasure to stand in front of the work of a master, and a man I have come to know as a friend over the years, as well as an inspiration in my career, but then he knows that anyway.

Well I had to get the photos in at some point. The first photo is of David and I standing by my painting. Thank you David, and thanks for your lovely comments about it.
The second image is of Mr Rolf Harris, every ones’ favourite Australian artist and a real gentleman. Sam was the official photographer and long time admirer of Rolf’s, so when he kissed her hand by way of greeting, well, I am not sure if she has washed it yet! We took some photos and chatted for a while. He has a new Wimbledon painting that has just been finished and is due out soon. It will be great to see.

The evening slowly wound down and after all paintings had been viewed Catherine and I discussed our thoughts about the event, and our favourite paintings.

The paintings are all for sale from the finalists, including the award winning entries, so log on to www.dswf.org and have a look.

Best wishes Paul

Just an update !
3:11pm - Jul 4, 2009

There is not too much to report at this time, hence the lack of posts recently. I was in London delivering my painting ‘Our Land’ to the Mall Gallery staff in preparation for the upcoming opening and announcements of the winners of this years coveted Wildlife Artist of the Year for 2009. I had a frame hand made by a good friend Joe Alexander.
He specialises in bespoke frames in 24 ct gold gilding. They are superb frames and he did a great job.

Don’t forget that the show is on for only a few days at the Mall Galleries. Full details can be obtained from www.dswf.org It will be worth the visit as 80 plus exhibits from some of the worlds best wildlife artists will be on show, including David Shepherds own work.

Other than that, I have been fairly glued down at the easel painting away. My latest image is of three Teal from Oare Marshes and will be posted on the blog as soon as it is completed.

I have launched my teaching activities and places are currently available so do not be disappointed and book up now. Details are contained in my blog a few posts back.

Are before I forget those of you who have been asking me about the new image Swimming, the limited edition print for which a release date has been pending. Well I can now safely announce that I am signing the first batch of prints that arriving at the studio on Monday 1st June. I am informed that there will be enough to cater for the pre release orders, and enough to satisfy new orders, before a second batch are signed in due course.
This also goes for the new image of the Chase-Mallards being released at the same time.

So call Sally Mitchell Fine Arts with your orders.

By the way I have had a couple of enquiries asking to purchase the original painting. It was sold directly off the wall at its first showing in April, so as with these enquiries I am taking commissions for new dog paintings right now. I will be posting something on the subject of commissions over the next few days, so if you are interested in placing a commission with me for dogs, horses, pets or portraits then it will be worth popping back in a few days and have a read.

The above painting on my site is for sale and called 'Savannah King' recent finalist in the BBC Wildlife Magazines Artist of the Year 2009

Best wishes Paul

My latest painting, hope you like it !
2:47pm - Jul 4, 2009

There is not a lot of news that I am able to share with you at this time, except to post an image of my latest painting. The title of the new wildfowl picture is ‘Widgeon on the Turn at Oare Marshes’. Oare Marshes are a beautiful corner in the east of Kent, England which is a smaller wildfowl and wader location. I say smaller compared to other similar areas in England. I believe Oare is a little gem of a place, and well worth a visit.

On this painting I have been experimenting with brush strokes and aligning colours against each other for a greater degree of effect. The sky in this image is of the utmost significance, without its drama there really can be no painting to speak of. The widgeon are the focal point within its composition; drama and movement are accentuated by the acute turn these birds are in the middle of making. This then creates the narrative for the painting, which I hope includes all the elements my work hopes to convey, light, atmosphere, action and narrative.

I will let you be the judge. I hope that you like the new painting, it measures 20” x 30” and is oil on canvas.

I have taken several stage photographs of the image and I hope that it will either appear in time within the pages of a magazine article or on the blog. I just need time to sort them out and write the text needed to accompany the photographs.

Best wishes Paul
